All Black Outfits – You Can’t Really Go Wrong
We’re sure you don’t need us to tell you that you’re in a win-win situation with an all black outfit. This is the most flattering of colours and when it comes to chic, it really can’t help itself – it can’t be beaten.
Some of our favourite staples have rocked noir for years. What doesn’t go with a biker jacket, for instance? Throw it over flimsy chiffon or a thin-strap silk dress, or stick to its common partners black skinnies and balance with cut-out ankle boots. Back in the sixties Marianne Faithfull defined the leather jumpsuit in The Girl on a Motorcycle, and as the film title transitioned into Naked Under Leather in some countries, we feel she proved her point.
Then there’s the little black dress outfit, beloved by cocktail drinkers for centuries and by Audrey Hepburn/Givenchy fans since Breakfast At Tiffany’s. Play it straight or diversify with sequins and cut-outs; alternatively add a fringe like Stella McCartney’s. Alexa Chung turned hers into a sundress but you could go the opposite way with transparent sleeves. Introduce leather panels or accessorise with strings of pearls.
Kit yourself out in black faux-leather in the form of a wrap-around midi or pleats. Finish with sunglasses and a round clutch, or go smooth in velvet pleats instead. Exude cool in a dark blazer, jeans and a fedora or team sooty lace with satin pants. Top black wide-leg trousers or palazzos with a short tee or pull oversize cashmere over an ebony mini and loafers. That’s how you put together an all black outfit.
Customise a black top or kimono with a fringe or cinch a charcoal shirt-dress. Match dark leather shorts with an embellished knit and drag around an oversize bag, or opt for a fuzzy-bordered black slouchy coat. Introduce knee-high socks to a flippy mini, and use different textures to appease opposing inky hues.
Rock a crop top, shorts and long vest in shades of night or flaunt mesh over a short dress. This colour’s a natural for the season’s sheer trend so experiment with layers, lengths and textures. Keep warm in a black double-breasted peacoat of wool or conversely, embrace the sun in a PVC skirt and biker boots.
Grace Hoddington calls black a “clean palate” that leaves her free for higher matters such as work. We can’t argue with that – who would dare? But we humbly suggest that it provides a clear palette and a blank canvas too. With black outfits you never go completely wrong. So what are you waiting for?
