We love camel, and we love black. Separately they’re smart, attractive and stylish, but put them together, and you have something special. You’ll find these classics at opposite ends of the neutral range, but give edgy black the chance to take soft warm camel out of its comfort zone, and it will deliver a class act.
Imagine a camel-coloured duffle with fur-lined hood and black skinnies, complemented by an animal print tote! Innovate with colour blocks, and accessorise darkly. Wrap up in a camel cape or poncho, and conceal a chain-handled mini bag or a clutch beneath it, or wear a fuzzy coat in the colour over a dusky leather skirt.
Throw a camel coat over a sooty turtle neck, pencil and booties, or substitute a tee and ripped jeans. Pull a beige sweater over dark skinnies, or stick to a light cardigan and pleated skirt, but define with a contrasting across the body bag. Display both on a hooped sweater dress with an oversized camel scarf, black knee-high boots, and chunky gold chain necklace.
A trench is a sort of default style for camel, but dark buttons will stand out. Match it with a gold-detailed black sweater, jeans, heels and an oversized bag. Go totally noir instead with jacket, jumper and pants offset by just a fedora in the paler shade, or plump for all-over camel and then accessorise in black instead.
Alternatively, make your outerwear a sombre affair over a light sweater. Sneak in a little white on a monochrome dress, but revert to camel for the topper. Team black jeans with nude shoes, and drag on a beanie, or mix textures, such as faux-leather and wool or jersey.
Look for a bag with contrasting detail, or choose two-tone. Pull on light-coloured boots or mustard tights with dark clothes, or reverse the order with over-the-knees and a smart camel coat or suit. Black faux-leather provides the perfect foil for a beige hue – think pants, pleats or bomber, offset with a camel jacket, culottes or button-through pencil (topped with a punched leather jacket – wow!).
The point is that a subtle colour like camel can be lifted and led by black, which in turn can hope for its hard edges to get a makeover. We think that once you grasp that, you’re on your way to a sensational look.
