Hot trends in outfits for summer 2015 have a definite retro vibe. Think the seventies and keep going. Expect oranges, browns and neons, gladiator sandals and bucket bags, bandannas and off-the-shoulder styling. Crafty types can get stuck in to sewing the sort of patchwork garments that dominated the runways.
Wrap yourself in gingham and frills or embrace bold flower patterns. Cover up in evenings with a blazer, vest or slouchy shirt, top with a fedora and you’ll have as cute an outfit for summer as anyone could want.
If you’re looking for casual summer outfits, cotton’s an adaptable choice that’s comfortable in all temperatures. It can be smart as well as casual, and ties in with the bohemian trend that’s doing the rounds right now. Stand out with contrasting prints but make them work together by sticking within a colour range.
Try a delicate touch
A flimsy fabric such as chiffon adds class and its floaty quality will keep you looking fresh – even if the weather feels oppressive, your summer outfit won’t! Offset your floaty top of animal print, polkadots or small floral repeat with black skinnies and heels. Balance an ephemeral mini dress with sandals that climb all the way to your knees or substitute boots instead. Let a maxi flow in pastel or white and introduce side slits to reveal a pair of shorts, providing a contrast in textures.
There is no clothing trend which screams ‘summer’ more than the denim dungaree trend! Arielle Nachami rocks this pair of full length overalls in the classic manner, pairing them with a plain white tee and cool shades.

Shorts are no longer a single-season staple but they’re still a mainstay of casual summer outfits and are both comfy and stylish, so bring out your bikini tops, crops and tanks to crown them. Wear shorts in denim, plain or embroidered, and anchor them with cuffs for shape. Choose check, flowery prints, leather or lace and finish with Roman sandals, boots, wedges or sneakers. Add a bib, work them in this year’s suede craze or turn them into culottes.
What’s the must-have outfit for summer 2015?
This season’s statement piece is the suede skirt as flaunted by the likes of Alexa Chung. Otherwise there’s the suedette version as flaunted by the rest of us. Add some class by investing in this soft material for clothes and accessories but pick a single item each time – a tan or camel-shade is stunning with pale blue denim, or offset a button-through skirt with a black slimline knit.
Alternatively, throw the jacket over a chiffon dress and team with suede boots or lace-up sandals. Pair it with flared jeans instead and add fringing for a touch of boho. Remember that suede is worth its price tag because you can prolong its life from an outfit for summer into winter wear with the addition of a sweater.
Dive into festival fashion such as boho and beachwear. Pack lacy rompers, stripy trousers and ripped denim. Showcase shorts with long tops and bra-lets, or plump for palazzos at an outdoor concert. Mix tunic and pants in different-sized checks or wear a two-coloured dress in the pattern and you’ll have a cute outfit for summer events. Alternatively, choose khaki for that safari-style outdoor vibe and throw over a poncho if temperatures drop.
Breton jumpers have been us with since the 1850s when they became French naval uniform, but we really have Coco Chanel to thank for this perennial favourite. Team with a navy blazer adorned with eal buttons for a genuine nautical look.
Yes, you can keep your layers!
Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee a heatwave so be ready with your favourite layering tricks. Kimonos are ideal for this. This season many are belted so match their proportions with wide-leg trousers, cropped or full-length, but keep the look simple by leaving out jewellery. Waistcoats and vests will give you more cover while transforming your casual summer outfit into evening chic.
I’m seeing jumpsuits everywhere…
Jumpsuits are our salvation in changeable weather. Wear yours solo, or tuck a t-shirt or fitted jumper beneath and call it a boiler suit. Slip a white tee under the dungaree variation or go for crops with a kick flare. Pretty things up with added detail like frills or ring the changes with a denim bib-front dress.
Step out in style
There’s plenty of variety in summer footwear, and what you walk around in really depends on lifestyle. Jump into sneakers, Roman or classic sandals, or pull on suede boots, cut outs or studded shoes. Try laced heels for a stunning effect!
Swimwear is much more than just a casual summer outfit for practical use – it’s a style statement, whether you choose monochrome, metallic threads, or shades that are either demure, sophisticated or as bright as the sun itself.
Beachwear can be stylish, chic and sporty, and it would be a crying shame to limit it to the beach. So dress up bandeau tops (in leather if you follow Tom Ford) with shorts, loose pants and fringed vests, and find shade under a hooped straw hat with a dark band, a metal-embellished felt fedora or a wide floppy brim. Cover with a slouchy shirt and finish with sneakers and bright-rimmed sunnies.
What colours are rocking right now?
This is the time of year for bold but simple statements so embrace bright hues in blocks to lift your mood on rainy days. If that’s too much for you, stay cool while the sun’s rays bounce off your white summer outfit. Accessorise with nude or reflect the weather in sunshine yellow. But never neglect that little black dress! Bring it up to date as an off-the-shoulder number and turn it into another cute outfit for your summer wardrobe.
