What to wear from late summer to early autumn is always a hard one to call. We could be heading for an Indian Summer (please!), or we might hit a harsh reality check. Our solution to this uncertainty is to layer, layer, and layer some more.
Don’t give up on your summer wardrobe just yet, though – adaptation is definitely the name of the game. Swap t-shirts for long sleeves, and team a plain blouse with your favourite floral midi, or with a peasant skirt. Take a tip from Miranda Kerr, who is sticking with her cut-offs for now, having had the good sense to add a coat and fitted jumper. You could risk the same yourself, with extra warmth from a chambray shirt.
Denim is ideal for cooler days, but then, what isn’t it good for? Match jeans with stripes, pull on a grey sweatshirt, or check out the slouchy sweaters from the Fall 2014 shows. Throw a denim jacket over a white dress to maintain a bit of cool (we’re not talking about the temperature now), or dress up your dungarees with a back-opening slitted top. Pair a high-waisted skirt with a long-sleeved crop top, or a Breton.
Ponchos are natural in-betweeners. See Valentino’s sweater style, or Burberry’s monogrammed blanket wrap. Go boho or classic, it’s all there. The fashion world is embracing autumn-leaf red this season, and Saint Laurent’s vibrant cape is no exception. Valentino has gone for a grey version, with over-knee boots. Prada’s also seeing red, in this case with fur trims, but Ralph Lauren, Christopher Kane and Gucci are using pink instead.
Cover up with a plaid cropped jacket or blazer, a belted coat, or a loose styling like Chloe’s classic shape in neutral shades. Follow the Japanese influence in Victoria Beckham’s collection, or rock your own look, with a pleated skirt and black baseball jacket.
Boots are still a fashion item rather than a bad weather essential at this stage, so grab a pair of high-heeled Oxford lace-ups while you can. As for length, Balenciaga and Valentino are stopping at mid-calf, while Chanel, Gucci and Alexander Wang venture higher. Drawstring bags bond well with the wools and softness of autumn outfits.
Trends are in transition at the moment. With all the styles that we’re seeing on the street right now, we’re hopeful that whatever the weather, autumn will be hot!
