Military Fashion Trend Report – Yeah, We Would Wear It
If the word military conjures up pictures of hot, scratchy uniforms and muddy exercises, we urge you to think beyond standard issue kits and the rest. Green is all around us in nature, especially in spring, and military green is warm and earthy. For 2015, all variations of the colour are rocking clothing and footwear, so sweep away any misconceptions, and be prepared to learn.
If armies have a trend, then it must be khaki, so as well as cropped trousers and parkas, permit it to emerge, de-briefed, as a silk blouse, and team it with a sequinned skirt. Top regulation-green cargo pants with a floaty top or a crop, or style them in faux-leather. Throw a tie-dyed crinkle shirt over dark trousers, or pair a khaki shirt dress with black Chelsea boots. Feminise with prowl lace-up shoes in two-shade floral canvas, like a peacenik’s answer to camouflage.
On the other hand, if it’s the military look that you’re aiming for, stand to attention in a double-breasted midi coat with gilt buttons, and look to marching orders on the runways. Balmain crafted leather jackets, while Isabel Marant worked the utility option with wool trousers, and suede ran riot. Keep your Hunter wellies for Kate Moss’s Glastonbury (we did mention military mud above!), but invest now in the brand’s rubber cross-body bag, or prepare for manoeuvres in a wool jumper with elbow and shoulder patches.
Gucci’s uniform jacket sported brown buttons and embellishments, with sleeves ringed by golden cuffs. Match it with a leather skirt for gravitas. Marc Jacobs went for belted dresses and wool-mix outerwear, while Cara Delevingne pulled a green blouse over a white cropped tee and more cargo pants. Diversify by adding a long slouchy white shirt or sweater instead, and finish with over-the-knee boots.
Leap into a military green jumpsuit, or hide inside an olive sheepskin coat. Belt a khaki front-button dress or a cotton jacket, and pair the latter with camouflage denim. Give some depth to an excess of muted colour by accessorising with animal print bags and shoes. Layer different shades, and stretch your target to mustard and tan, the former for tights and scarves, and the latter for bags and boots.
We hope that we’ve given the military green trend its civilian credentials for you now. Start your campaign now, and style it to last through spring – that’s an order!
