Fashion has to be forward-looking, which is how we found ourselves watching the Autumn/Winter 2015 runways. It didn’t us take long to spot a trend, and we suggest that you put maxi coats on your shopping list without further ado.
Paris saw the return of John Galliano, and his first collection for Maison Margiela, with long coats in leather and suede. Over in New York, Francisco Costa went maxi for Calvin Klein, and Max Mara’s signature camel coats lengthened. Meanwhile, Milan broke out in floor-length outerwear in all manner of colours and patterns, with Francesco Scognamiglio showcasing long chiffon gowns and a satin maxi with rose embellishment.
In London, Sophie Dahl swished in full-length black velvet for Alice Temperley, and Burberry’s title of Patchwork, Pattern and Prints said it all. With a strong Bohemian influence, coats reached for the floor, watched by the likes of Cara Delevingne, Jourdan Dunn, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell, and fringes swung from shoulder to mid-calf.
Get this look as a trench, and add trousers and t-shirt in the same pale colour. Team a wrap-around with sneakers, and top with a fedora. Match pink or blue with grey, or snuggle into a wool blend enhanced by an oversized scarf. Take this one step further in a blanket coat, a natural with boyfriend jeans. Add skinnies, tee and heels to a camel shift, or keep them subdued under neon shades.
Contrast a tartan mini skirt under a dark maxi coat, and accentuate with ankle boots, or opt for shorts instead. Conversely, reach for elegance in a chiffon maxi dress and a topper that’s slightly shorter. Seek warmth under a quilted version, or throw a black version over ripped denim and graphic top, and add sunglasses.
Slouchy coverings don’t tolerate timidity, so match with a roomy tote, or a large bucket bag. More tailored models call for cutbacks in size, so substitute a mini-bag or a clutch. Wrap a plaid scarf around a double-breasted version, or pull on a beanie. Find room under a blanket coat for a bomber or loose sweater, and grab your favourite trainers.
This may have rocked the A/W 2015/16 shows, but make no mistake, it will be hitting a street near you any day now (if it hasn’t already). You can work this for summer too, so we advise you to make a space in your wardrobe for this long, lean trend.
