If you want to add just one really useful item to your winter layering wardrobe, we say that it should be the roll neck and turtleneck – well OK then, that sounds like two things (sort of) but we don’t think you should give that too much thought. However you term it – and we could go on – it offers more possibilities than it has names.
Make no mistake, this is a trend that will keep you warm, a bit like having an integral scarf around your neck. Seize the moment with a heavy knit in grey, and team with skinnies and pointed pumps. Or team a black turtleneck with leather leggings à la Olivia Palermo, and if it’s oversized, drag on a field jacket or parka.
This season, though, it’s white roll necks that are really having a moment. Nicolas Ghesquière certainly thinks they rock. On his début for Louis Vuitton, he tucked them under shift dresses and beneath leather jackets, and paired them with belted minis. Add your own take by styling classically with a camel blazer. Dare to go sleeveless in a mega-thin model, or show off a ribbed crop with shorts. At the other end of the temperature scale, throw the chunky version over a white skirt or distressed jeans.
Black’s never far away from our thoughts, though, so team a slouchy sweater with leather pants. Substitute with an A-line in hounds-tooth or monochrome checks, and top with a fedora, or pair a wide neck with joggers and ankle boots. Command respect by enhancing your funnel-neck with the addition of a jacket, mini, thigh-high boots, and animal print bag. Alternatively, layer it beneath another jumper and pull on a beanie.
Include other neutrals such as beige and nude, or embrace colour as Alexa Chung did. Check out her burgundy high neck and leather mini, or make yours a print skirt instead. Trawl the charity and vintage shops to find all the colours of the rainbow, and use them.
Create something different with hoops, stripes and grid patterns, or pull a cable knit over ripped jeans and heels. Style a polo-neck dress with a collarless coat, or get the runway look with black turtleneck and bucket bag, teamed with gold pencil and pumps.
We love that Audrey Hepburn image showcasing a roll neck and cute pony tail. She’s always an inspiration, but all the same, we’re sure that your own ideas will carry you through.
