The Suede Trend Is Upon Us. This Is How You Wear It – Outfits And Ideas
Everywhere we look at the moment, we see suede. The runways were full of it, whether it was separates versus frocks, or pallid patchwork (all at Philip Lam), wide-legged crops (Gucci) or tie-belted coats (Givenchy). Chloé’s belted jackets boasted matching shorts, while Saint Laurent trotted out suede Chelsea boots and patched jackets.
Jason Wu followed wrap skirts with a leather and suede pleated dress, but we award top marks to a green creation with deeply-plunging neckline and thigh-high slit. And now that we’ve mentioned colour, that’s what gives this trend a plus factor this time around. It could be purple, deep blue, mustard, pastel or whatever you fancy, but it has re-invented itself to give us a fresh take on this most tactile of materials.
If you’re sticking to more traditional shades, team beige culottes with a white top and animal print shoes, or pair a nude suede jacket with a cream turtle-neck and black leather pants. A light brown button-through skirt, another Gucci favourite, will stun with buckle ankle boots and a dark punched leather jacket over a white tee. Pit grey against navy, brown, pink or yellow, or experiment with outfits in varying hues of the same colour.
You may have picked up on a seventies vibe here, so match a suede uniform jacket to black pants, or cover ripped skinnies, leopard-spot boots and a silk shirt with a light tan coat, and top with a fedora. Patchwork coats in pastels compete with suede flares and boot-cuts as they always have, while a maxi adds gravitas. Convert outerwear with a trench, or a cowboy jacket.
Move forward now to minis with a sculpted edge, or fringed skirts. Show off your blue suede shift, but soften it with a belt and metallic jewellery. Team that maxi with a chunky cable knit, or contrast suede shorts with chiffon. Offset a top in soft skin with slouchy but brightly patterned fabric pants, go sporty in burgundy joggers, or choose suede with pretty cut-outs.
Oh-so-comfy boots are over the knee in taupe or black, and then joined at the thigh to an oversized sweater. Bags come in all shapes, sizes and shades, and provide textural contrast for cotton and other thin fabrics. As for styling suede for 2015, we suggest that you seize pieces that will transition smoothly into spring, but style them for now. Why wait?
