Yes, we know they could mean soggy hemlines, and we realise that they’re a huge leap from the close-fitting legwear of custom, but wide-leg trousers are rocking 2015 already, so we suggest that you work out how to style them.
Ask the A-list for starters. Victoria Beckham is familiar with her own flares, of course, but found time to step forth in pale blue baggies by Chloé, set off to perfection by a white t-shirt. Rihanna, bless her, went for a sporty trouser suit with trainers. If you’re still unsure, roll up the ends to follow Jaime King’s lead, for a flattering cropped variation that sits around the ankles.
Team a dark shade with a white blouse, cinch with a wide belt, and throw on a tailored vest. This cut is no shrinking violet, so – now that we’ve mentioned colour – adopt any that will get you noticed, seeing that you’re going that way anyway. Team leaf green with a black crop, or red with an animal print jacket.
All-white is just as bold, whether the trousers are paired with a lacy top or an oversized sweater. Break it up for variety in a Breton and a navy panama, or a blush pink fuzzy bomber. Opt for a softer vision in cream pants teamed with olive green, or switch to prints for a less in-your-face expanse. Couple tartan with a loose shirt, geometrics with a leather moto, or florals with a boho-inspired top of your choice, and add a wide floppy hat.
This is a look that you can dress up with a change of accessories and some chunky jewellery. Team swishy fabrics with a silk blouse and heels or platforms. Palazzos need just a simple tee or a tailored knit, while a jumpsuit is the complete item. Adapt your wide-leg trousers to flares if you can’t tear yourself away from shape entirely – choose denim with a flower-print blazer, and finish with wedges.
Bold styles demand appropriate footwear. RiRi’s trainers notwithstanding, heels, mules and towering sandals will balance the whole (even if you can’t see always see them). Accentuate your waist with a high band or a wide belt, and top with a fedora.
All fashionistas possess the flair to fly their comfort zone, and wide-leg trousers invite imaginations to run riot. There’s something for everyone in this trend, so plunge in and have fun.
