Autumn is really not the time for harsh colours. Weather and light can be unkind, so we’re drawn towards something with warmth, but at the same time, we want to be cheered. Luckily for anyone feeling a bit glum or a little lost, mustard yellow is trending this autumn, and it has endless possibilities.
Copy Fearne Cotton, who teamed a skirt of this colour with a blue denim jacket and red bag, or wrap it around you on a scarf, as Elle MacPherson did. Olivia Palermo stunned in a cropped-sleeved dress with animal-print platforms, while Kirsten Dunst contrasted her pleated frock with red lips. Meanwhile, we’re sure that you’re with us when we say that Rihanna knows a thing or two about trends, and will agree that she arguably beat them all with a warm mustard coat, ripped jeans and white sunnies.
Mustard is naturally hot, so cool it with beige or ivory. Match yellowy-brown cropped pants with a creamy blazer, or a tailored jumper with a khaki wrap around skirt. Add an off-white jacket, and brighten with some bling. Alternatively, increase the temperature by coupling with navy, or go for a deep yellow print on a navy background, accessorised with an outsize bag in brown or taupe.
We love this shade in colour blocking – see Victoria Beckham in mustard and black with burgundy detail, and adapt your own with any shade you like. And that’s just the beginning. The next stage is to experiment with red, brown, grey, dark green and purple, but being fashionistas, you’ll prefer to be slightly audacious, so check out mint green, lilac, pink and yellow.
If you’re not ready to seize the moment, start with accessories like pumps, bags and scarves. Restrict the rest of your outfit to neutrals, to be sure that you wow with your statement pieces. Break the impact of mustard yellow tights with a cable or rib texture, and tone down the effect further with a black mini if you must. However, we feel sure that this reticence won’t last long!
Have a care for your own colouring when it’s up against such a strong shade. Dark mustard will enhance paler tones, while olive complexions rock a lighter hue. We can sense already that you’re getting a feel for this mellow yellow vibe, so plan your palette now!
