Alessandra Ambrosio, Model

Alessandra Ambrosio knew what she wanted to do from an early age, and we’re glad that she stuck to it. As an eight-year-old, she spotted a picture of top cover girl Karen Mulder, and recalls: “I wanted to be like her”. When she was twelve, she enrolled in modelling classes, and by the age of fifteen, she was a model for Dilston Stein. Her career took off after she’d been a finalist in the 1996 Elite Model Look national competition in Brazil, with her ending up on the cover of Brazilian Elle.

It’s hard to believe that as a child, she had image issues. Botched surgery to pin back her ears caused ongoing problems, leaving her with an antipathy towards plastic surgery.

After seeing some of her Polaroids, Guess booked her for the Millenium Guess? campaign. She’s appeared in ads for Christian Dior, Revlon, Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren and others, and in the Pirelli calendar. Catwalk work includes Prada, Chanel and Oscar de la Renta. Ambrosio has graced the covers of international magazines such as Elle, Cosmopolitan, GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, and Ocean Drive, and she became the only model on the front of Glamour in the U.S. in 2006. She posed with Sacha Baron Cohen for Marie Claire in 2009, as a promotion for his film Bruno.

In 2004, she was picked as the first spokesmodel for the Victoria’s Secret PINK line, and the next year, she took to their fashion show runway in lingerie formed entirely from candy. She did the 2008 show three months after the birth of her first child, and for the 2011 show, a pregnant Alessandra wore the show’s heaviest ever wings, at 30 lbs. The following year, she donned the Floral Fantasy Bra of rubies, amethysts, sapphires and diamonds, set in rose and yellow gold.

The Brazilian was chosen as the face of UK brand Next, and featured in their first television campaign for twelve years. She launched her own swimwear brand in 2004, and a lifestyle brand, Alé by Alessandra, is next. Her October 2011 blog for Vogue saw the model post photos of her outfits online each day.

But we’re sure that one of her proudest moments must have been appearing at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics, as part of the Rio de Janeiro Handover show, in preparation for Brazil’s hosting of the next Games. We suggest that she has plenty more to cheer about, too!
