We consider skateboarding through the streets of Camden to be a pretty cool pastime. We firmly believe that being scouted for a modelling career while skating is even cooler. That’s what happened to Ash Stymest when he was seventeen, landing him a contract with Models 1 agency. Then French fashion designer Hedi Slimane recruited him for personal work, and in 2008, he debuted on the cover of the first Japanese issue of Vogues Hommes, photographed by Slimane – quite a year!

After that impressive start, more magazine work followed, with the new model appearing in several issues of Russian and Italian Vogue. In October of the same year, he opened the spring 2009 Balenciaga show in Paris. He gazed up at us, with just a hint of attitude, from the front of publications such as Dazed & Confused, EY! Electric Youth!, Sportswear International, Fiasco and HUgE. He also worked with Pringle of Scotland, and Galliano by John Galliano.
Born in Bromley, South East London, in 1991, Ash has an impressive collection of tattoos. He’s not just a pretty face, either, having presented on MTV Bang until he was dropped in 2011 for being “too rude”. He said at the time: “Everybody thinks I’m a bit of a bad boy”, but claims he was finding the fashion world a bit pretentious, and was trying not to take it too seriously. Drumming is another passion, leading him to a place in a band, Bones. He diversified once more when he had his portrait painted by film director and painter Gus Van Sant.
Early in 2013, the young Brit starred in a Louie Bank photoshoot for the new Save Wild Tigers campaign. At around the same time, he featured as the face of Topman and Topshop Worldwide, shot by Alisdair McLellan and styled by Alister Mackie.
After pairing with model Agyness Deyn for Dr. Marten’s autumn/winter 2012 campaign, #firstandforever, Ash was back for more of the same in spring 2013. He was photographed with other models by Gavin Watson as one of a tribe of outsiders, returning to Dr. Marten’s roots on the edgy streets of Manchester.
Recently, Stymest joined other young male models in the newest campaign of T.I for Men, given an original treatment by photographer Greg Swales, and walked for Alexander McQueen’s autumn/winter show. The end of 2013 saw him on the pages of the December issue of the British fashion magazine Wonderland, wearing Diesel’s Tribute Collection by Nicola Formichetti.
Ash doesn’t appear to workout, so his body is lean and completely natural. He seems to be one of those hyperactive people who can’t sit still, and he carries an air of rebellion about him, of existing slightly on the margins. Briefly married to Maille Doyle, another fan of tattoos, they have a daughter, Summer.
Ash Stymest is in demand with photographers who want a piece of that raw, untamed quality. The streets of North London may not echo to the sound of one particular skateboard quite so much nowadays, but we say that Camden’s loss is the fashion world’s gain!
