How does a girl cope when the weather gets downright hostile, and the wind, no respecter of persons, makes you feel as though you’re wearing a bikini rather than a perfectly serviceable bomber (that’s assuming you’re not doing skimpy, of course)? We’ll tell you how – the robe coat is trending right now, so say hello to your comfort blanket for autumn 2014. Wrap it around you, snuggle into it, and just ignore the outside world.
You may think that it superficially resembles the gown that you bundle on when you stumble out of bed in the morning, or the garment that you take to the shower, but we’d like to respectfully point out that you’re mistaken. Take a second look – its long silhouette makes it way more elegant than that, and as for style, you’ll have no trouble in finding your perfect partner for winter days. Just look to the runways for inspiration.
Altazurra’s brightly coloured grids combined with the belt to define shape, while Louis Vuitton leaned towards retro with a floral print, with Céline, Chloe, Richard Chai Love among other designers who ran with the robe coat. Cashmere looks – and feels – just great for this fashion. It’s cosy, soft, but always oh-so-chic. So naturally, it put in several appearances, from Fendi’s two-tone felted take, to Bottega Veneta’s oversized kind.
Dries van Noten banished draughts with a quilted and zipped version, and to cheer us on dark days, magicked an optic wave stripe in pink and grey. In fact, you’ll be spoilt for choice between plaid, houndstooth, tweed, and Vivenne Westwood’s woven wrap. Maybe you should pass them all, and opt instead for head-to-toe red in coat and boots, à la Donna Karan.
Keep it pulled tight over a pencil slim skirt and fitted knit, a tailored dress and over the knee boots. Alternatively, open up the front to jeans or slim pants, and a turtle neck. Retreat inside a roomy hood for the ultimate in warmth. This easy-to-wear item is a shamelesss flatterer too, with its belt pulling in the coat, and giving you the kind of waist that made Victorian ladies prone to swooning.
Collars come in dual shades, sheepskin edged, or in the case of Altazurra, outsize and in danger of becoming secondary robes themselves. Wear your robe coat as a jacket or a maxi, but don’t take it off until spring.
