Lace has been having a moment this summer, and it looks as if it wants to extend into Autumn 2014. The black variety is especially suitable for the heavier fabrics of the misty season, but it can’t help flaunting a hint of decadence in defiance of the weather to come. And that’s just what we need!
Every woman needs that little black number in her wardrobe all year round. Choose yours with a lace inset, a frill, or cap sleeves. Finish with understated classic jewellery, and patent stilettos in the same colour, or in nude. A black midi with a filigree detail would be a stunner with a crop top, and heels in a bright shade. Or go for a high waisted all-lace version with a feature such as a large bow, or a belt. Tuck in a blush tailored knit, or a blouse, to accentuate it more.
Team a hot pink or neon green skirt with a black lace top, or cover one with the other to impress. Layers provide extra impact – it works especially well with this colour – and add depth. Conversely, be daring for evening with a sheer maxi over a bra top, with silver strappy sandals.
Contrast the intricacy of the material with plain accessories. Or go the other way, pairing lace-covered bags and shoes with a simple outfit. Scarves, of course, are always ready and waiting for this trend! They were just made for it. Off-white softens a dark coat or jumper, while a scarf of black lace will smarten any jacket.
Do something new with the look this season. Add chunky details to dress it down, such as zips, metal or leather. Nina Ricci mixed black satin with pieces of lace that floated out from the dress. Follow Dolce & Gabbana down the runway, with added appliqués of nature’s finest: flowers and cute woodland creatures. Or put silver gunmetal lace onto black mesh.
For the ultimate fashion statement, how about a black lace wedding dress?! That’s only if you’re getting married, of course – although such daring and style could lead to life-long admiration, anyway.
If all this is too fussy for you, at least pull on some fancy tights. Then you might find you want a little bit more after all, so match with a lace skirt or dress worked in a larger repeat. However, we should warn you that, once you fall, black lace is for life!
