What could be more practical than a blanket coat for winter 2016? Think of the multitude of layers that it can hide! It’s equally at home on your sofa as it is when protecting you from the elements, and can safely be adopted as your new best friend.
Cara Delevingne pointed us in the right direction along the Burberry Prosum runway, and you’ll lust after their cashmere blend, for sure. Olivia Palermo, Sienna Miller, Alexa Chung, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and SJP (say no more) are among the A-listers flaunting monogrammed ponchos in Cara’s slip stream. If your budget doesn’t stretch to that, personalise your own.
May we point out, by the way, that this is more than just a distant cousin of the oversized scarf, with the blanket coat offering endless versatility and variety of shape, style, colour and fabric. Stella McCartney fashioned hers in houndstooth on wool, and as a wrap front coat, while Chloé chose an alpaca-blend cape, and Isabel Marant interpreted it as a kaftan coat over a turtleneck sweater.
Go the Burberry way with blocks of bold colour, or warm brown shades on black and grey. Grab monochrome geometrics or ethnic prints, and team with an oversized bag. Step out instead in a jacquard pattern with leather pants, or put plaid with skinnies and a tee. Have fun with a reversible poncho – try black and white houndstooth with a red tartan – or pair buffalo check with ripped jeans and chain boots.
Adorn with fringes, furry collars or hoods, and define with contrasting edges. Pull on a beanie or a fedora, and finish with sunnies. Fasten the whole with a pin or a belt, or just just wrap it around. Simply drape it over one shoulder if the day is mild, or celebrate the spring in an asymmetrical blanket coat over denim shorts and shirt.
If this is all a bit too untamed for you, opt for a salt and pepper maxi trench with skinny jeans and ankle boots, or a textured blanket wrap coat. Keep the mood calm with pastels and neutrals, and switch between fleece, knits, faux-fur capes, and long ponchos.
On mornings when you’re reluctant to creep out from under the duvet, the blanket coat trend makes for a relatively painless transition. Layer shamelessly and choose your style, and we promise that even the worst winter’s day won’t seem so bad.
