Everybody loves flowers, whether we’re talking about a bouquet, a vase, a garden, or a park. Weave them into our clothes, and we’ll blossom, too. As Vogue’s Alexandra Shulman has pointed out, the new florals go from pastels to sport to techno. They herald the new spring season, and we’re happy to take her word for that.
We love the femininity of floral prints. Find them this season on floaty dresses, smart suits, slinky gowns, and retro jumpsuits. Last year, it was all about delicate pastels. This time around, shouty blooms burst forth, and pale primroses clung to vibrant backdrops. Others seem to have been painted on with bold brush strokes, like a Van Gogh.
Wear a mismatch of patterns like Stella McCartney’s mixed prints. Break them up with sheer panels of one colour (see Tania Taylor and Dior). Such strong statements can stand on their own, so keep hairstyles simple and makeup almost non-existent; then just add a pair of sandals. If you’re not ready for the jungle yet, go in gently with J.Crew’s floral trousers, tempered by a stripey top and a black coat. Be advised, though, that the bigger the colour clash, the better, so take the plunge before autumn kills both the plants and the style.
We’ve spoken of femininity, but this trend lends itself to straight, rather masculine, lines in a surprisingly easy way – think sharp trouser suits in shiny fabrics. Or use defined waists, plunging necklines, and slit skirts to reinvent flowery finery. Floral print jackets, cropped or otherwise, and bombers, would be a good choice with a plainer outfit. On the other hand, an oversized one-colour sweatshirt will tone down a riot of colour, if that’s what you’re wearing.
Christian Dior has tagged on large-print slogans, while Alberta Ferretti is working boldly embroidered flowers onto vivid patterns. Prada added jewels and beads, while Marni topped outfits with rosettes. Ruffles and 3-D embellishments lent volume and depth to catwalks creations (even if they’re a little impractical).
Footwear’s getting in on the act, too, from fabric-covered stilettos and platforms, to pumps and sandals. Similarly, bags and accessories are all helping to kit out the flower children of 2014.
Floral trends, like their garden counterpart, pop up every spring. As every gardener knows, no two are alike, and no two seasons are ever the same. That sounds just like the world of fashion to us!
