We may be stating the obvious, but you can do worse than to follow Kate Moss. She knows how to make this season’s fringe trend look cool, so if you’re at all worried about turning into a cowgirl, check out how she works it.
New York’s Spring 2015 Fashion Week sprung this look everywhere, from Proenza Schouler’s evening wear to Prabal Gurung’s ombre tops, but you can start rocking it for spring 2015. Fringes on dresses and skirts can be as long as you like, with splits as high as you dare. Neutral shades work well, to be topped with a cropped black leather moto jacket on cooler days.
Suede is ideal for fringes, making them swirl and kick as you move, or grounding them when you don’t. Look beyond natural colours to something bolder. Stand out from the crowd, like Dakota Fanning at the première of Effie Gray, stunning in a red suede mini with fringe detailing. If we can’t convince you to do that, at least liven up a pale jacket with a bright fedora, or let an animal print peek through.
Fringing will add a touch of class to a tailored leather jacket, or will give gravitas to a clutch. That favourite street staple, denim, always demands a place, but this time around, team it with plain colours. Control your fringes with side lacing on a waistcoat or mini, but in any case, stick to one statement piece, and go for simplicity. It’s enough!
Follow this mantra with your boots for this trend, too – skinnies or a fitted dress are the pairings to aim for. Staying with accessories, scarves are ideal to ease yourself into the right mood if you’re still shy. Once you’re over that, how about fringed loafers?
It’s a fluid style that was made for silkiness and slinkiness – shimmer as you sip your cocktails in Just Cavalli’s gorgeous multi-coloured flapper dress. Decorate with long strings of beads or pearls. For a modern take on the Jazz Age, see Marco di Vincenzo’s pink and grey layered creation.
Cover wide trousers with a skirt of flowing strands, and top with a cropped cami. Or choose a plain tee with fringing that cascades over your shorts (yes, you can still wear them). Throw on a kimono with the same detail, but be warned – you may not want to remove it until next season’s shows.
