The boyfriend shirt is, of course, not to be confused with your boyfriend’s shirt. Or is it? Summer 2014 could be the time for raiding the wardrobe of a boyfriend, brother, male friend, or whoever. The origin of the name is obvious, and while your boyfriend may wonder what all the fuss is about, to you it’s a cosy comfy wrap-around, with amazing versatility for endless variations on the theme.
Don’t think we’re being creatively lazy if we suggest pairing with denim. We never tire of this fabric, and jeans are just so suited to the boyfriend shirt. It goes without saying that the more ripping, the better. Top with a hat, perhaps a panama, maybe felt. Then pull on a bomber jacket in denim or leather when coolness comes.
Be the bee’s knees and show your own, with shorts under an oversize shirt. We’d say choose ripped or distressed denim again, of course. You could substitute a mini for a similar effect – pick a heavy material or leather for the best look. Tuck parts of the top randomly into it, and loosely roll the sleeves to be really chic. For an alternative take, tie at the front waist.
Team with skinnies or leggings and killer heels, and frame your face with statement sunglasses. Hunt out patterns and plaid, or dazzle with stripes and spots – who says men’s clothes are dull? It certainly wasn’t us.
Keep your manly garment in touch with its feminine side by hanging with long strings of pearls and gold chains, or by pinning with flowers. Chunky jewellery works, too, if it’s colourful and girly. Keep bags on the small side, and paint your lips in candy pink.
No boyfriend? No problem (cynics would agree with that). Get along to your local charity shop – there tend to be less bargain-hunters buzzing around the men’s rails most days, so you’ll have plenty of choice. Of course, you could buy new, but second hand gives you at least a chance of acquiring something that may have been worn by someone’s boyfriend (but without the relationship issues).
Get a sexy twist for evenings with a single button fastening, especially if the shirt has a large pattern. It was good enough for Alexander Want and Rodarte, and for sure, the whole look rocks for us, leaving boyfriends everywhere searching for keys to lock their closets.
