Just what is it about lace that makes us return to it again and again? Maybe it’s because it’s so clever about re-inventing itself, or perhaps it’s just so gorgeous that we can’t leave it alone. Whatever it is, we advise you to start planning how to style it this season because lace is captivating us all for spring/summer 2015.
Take white lace for instance. Allow weddings and proms their place but for less momentous days, imagine a clinging dress with dark heels. Render it streetwise with a denim jacket and thigh-high black boots (check out Cara Delevingne), and top with a tan fedora. Cinch a looser version with a narrow leather belt in taupe. Go for Givenchy frills or stay smooth like Louis Vuitton and Erdem, who produced a snowy lace-panel shirt dress.
Dress down a pale filigree skirt with a slouchy shirt, or copy Michael Kors and smarten it with a chic white jacket and baby blue blouse. Choose ivory pleats and add a fringe as Oscar de la Reinta did, or just take on accents. Change the texture with an alabaster sweater featuring a lacy back panel.
Alternatively, get an edgy feel with black lace. Layer a frock with a long pastel coat and add a floppy hat, or float elegantly in a loose maxi. On the runways, Jason Wu spun a dark web while Rodebjer expanded rope lace enhanced by an ebony faux fur jacket. Alexander Wang favoured sooty eyelet patterns embellished with silver and Diane von Furstenberg was blown away by dusky ballet attire. Altuzarra took a different approach by teaming a black filigree dress with mustard-check outerwear.
Chanel introduced single and multi-hued colours which Victoria Beckham toned down, but Erdem definitely didn’t (picture stunning purple and red). Sink into a romantic image of Victorian-inspired cream; mix with brown and layer with silk. Conversely, turn your back on reserve and turn heads instead with red lace – join Julia Roberts, Kelly Osbourne and Jessica Chastaine, who made the shade her own with her flame-coloured hair and lips.
Wear sheer fabric to show off shorts or pair a white crochet crop top with skinnies in the same colour, and accessorise with silver jewellery. Trim or cover clothes, hats, shoes and bags with same-shade or contrasting lace. Add a pop of red to black lace, or orange to white. See what we mean about versatility?
