We’ve taken our time over this one, we know, but we wanted to get it right. It’s a trend that needs some thought – denim on denim has had its detractors in the past, and not always without reason, we have to admit. But we’ve looked around and we’re convinced that, worked properly, it’s something special.
Contrasting tones will do it, such as a light blue shirt with indigo skinnies (like Alessandra Ambrosio – or reverse that if you’re Miranda Kerr), teamed with a white bucket bag. Substitute a midi, and render it chic with heeled ankle boots. Throw a quilted cotton coat over a Breton and boyfriend jeans, and add striped canvas sneakers.
For a nod to femininity, flaunts frills on a denim dress, and slip into matching platforms. Check out Stella McCartney’s playsuit composed of shorts and front-tied crop, and top with a straw hat. Style a flare skirt or a button-up alternative with a short-sleeved denim blouse, or ring the changes with a skirt.
Always ask Rihanna if you want to know how to work a trend. Our girl was spotted in matching top and bottom with bold embroidery, while Beyoncé and Jessica Alba settled for pale blue blouse and jeans. Katy Perry’s Versace dress can be pronounced denim on denim due to the varying hues of its patches, and its accompanying mini-bag, but Anne Hathaway has been sticking to a classic combo. Kate Bosworth, on the other hand, went for an oversized top and fitted white tee over tight pants.
Hide a dark bomber and straight-legged jeans under a cream trench, or cover a pale blue boyfriend shirt with a darker jacket, and finish with faux-leather leggings. Want to break up your double denim? Customise by fraying edges of garments to expose a border of flesh between top and pants.
Pull a denim vest in burgundy over a navy shirt-dress, or pair a black sleeveless jacket with shorts in baby blue. Wear a lightweight denim shirt under heavy-duty dark dungarees, likely to be this season’s statement piece. Alternatively, go for a slouchy top in subdued stripes over a light wash.
The runways fairly rocked with the fabric, with Joseph Altuzarra subverting the trend by producing silk shirts with prints that mimicked denim. Balmain showed a loose jumpsuit with an embellished jacket, and the whole universe loves Junya Watanabe’s patchwork denim. Once the fashion world embraces a trend, ideas will follow thick and fast – how are yours coming along?
