Nobody wants to wear plain old sunnies at the moment! The trend for summer 2014 is rainbow-reflecting glasses that have you looking at yourself through someone else’s eyes, literally. So what are you waiting for?
If you still need convincing, just take a look at how the celebrities have fallen for mirrored lenses. Of course, as you’d expect, Sarah Jessica Parker was trialling them on a film poster in 2010, but now, mere mortal celebrities – and the rest of us – have caught up.
Jamie Chung’s are a deep, deep blue. Beyonce sported mirrored aviators with a tank top and cut offs, while Heidi Klum plumped for oversized specs. Kate Hudson’s are edged by chic white, and Gwen Stefani didn’t let us – or herself – down (does she ever?), choosing printed frames that are just stunning.
The thing about mirrored sunglasses is that they look special at any time, and with any outfit. They’re fabulous when you’re all dressed up, but they give an edge to your most casual daywear, too.
There are endless combinations. The bright colours are a natural with clothes in neutral shades. How about amber lenses and gold rims, with enormous hoop earrings? A white dress with shiny spectacles works just perfectly, and wide frames stand out with any style. Match them to your hat or to your hair, or contrast them – play one off against the other. Accessorise them shamelessly with red lips – always!
As if that’s not enough, there are the shapes: aviators, round, wayfarers, and so on. If our eyes are green, it’s not due to following the trend – it’s because we’ve been checking out Kate Moss’s white cat-eye pair. Do translucent frames work? We think they do. Blend the brightness with your scarf, your jewellery, or your clothes. Or don’t! Opposites attract, they say, and it’s smart to make people (like us) sit up and take notice.
Above all, this is a fun look. We’ve seen hologram-like shades that change with every angle! Mirrored sunglasses can say beach cocktails and sunlounger, but don’t stick to convention. Wear them to shock with your finest get-up (a pleasant shock, we hasten to add).
You can play with this concept, too. Hide behind them and stare out at the world, without giving yourself away. You can stay incognito and inscrutable. All watchers can see is themselves! So go buy and enjoy!
