Monochrome is moving forward! Fashion has embraced Op Art this season, but it’s definitely not retro. Patterns and geometric blocks have inspired the likes of Victoria Beckham, Celine, Rodarte and Alexander Wang to add couture and cool design to a perennial favourite.
At Milan Fashion Week, for example, the trend was highlighted by Jil Sander’s flirtation with prints, and Missoni’s waves and abstracts. Sportsmax created circles and squares, or splashed patches of harsh black on soft white dresses for dramatic effect, while Karl Largerfeld’s pale shades were broken up by geometric motifs.
We dream white for weddings, and impose black on funerals. White can come across as a bit sterile and flat, so give it depth with a chunky sweater, overalls or some fun sunglasses. Be bold, adding a touch of neon or primary colour, and painting lips hot scarlet, sexy pink or glowing orange. As for black, sunshine yellow or deep crimson will breathe life into it.
For work, ditch neon in favour of Yves Klein blue, or utilise one colour for maximum flexibility. You probably already possess the clothes you need – search around for little extras that will make you stand out. We can include grey here, too, teaming wool trousers and sensible boots with a sweatshirt, and perhaps a hint of pale yellow or pastel pink.
Flair with care is the message for adding class to clothes that might be too much otherwise – a black leather mini can be chic if you keep the rest simple, sticking to an open sandal style for footwear.
How about monochrome luggage? We don’t mean a chequered suitcase! We’re suggesting that it’s a great colour scheme for travel, with your wardrobe and accessories being interchangeable, and mostly made of the kind of material that packs (and arrives) well.
Reverse the trend: Accessorise with B&W to offset the principle item in colour. Or go all out for monochrome. A black dress, teamed with an oversize black and white bag, or chunky jewellery, could look stunning. We generally love the idea of mixing patterns in an outfit, but in this instance, don’t overdo it – offset one piece against plain. The choice of shoes right now is amazing! Seek out and find dog tooth check, white wedges, black heels, or even pumps, and you’re halfway to the total look.
Monochrome is certainly having a moment right now. Complement it with the right colours, and you could have a moment, too!
