If you want to see the face of Upper East Side chic, check out New York socialite and model Olivia Palermo, because we think she epitomises it. An Italian-American of southern Italian descent, she was born in Greenwich, Connecticut, in 1986, and as you might expect, attended independent schools, where she was hot on sports.
Her career began, we’re glad to report, when photographer Patrick McMullan saw her at an auction, and started to photograph her about town. Palermo gradually became involved with the charity event circuit. She was signed to Wilhelmina Models in 2009, and has graced the international fashion world with TV, design and modelling work. Magazine covers include Tatler, ASOS, Elle Mexico, Marie Claire UK, and Shop Til You Drop.
In 2010, she joined her German fiancé Johannes Huebl in campaigns for Mango and Hogan. They both take their wardrobe choices seriously, but she admits that, while she hardly ever criticises his outfits, he is much more forthcoming when it comes to hers. We don’t think this is fair, when Olivia has such a great sense of style, and looks perfect in whatever she wears!
We know her best for her role in cult American reality TV show, The City, which in 2008, took her to the PR department at Diane Von Furstenberg, and later, to the accessories department at Elle. Her part was increased for the second part of the first series in 2009, and for the second and final season in 2010, Palermo gained reporting duties for Elle.com.
Other television work followed. She was guest judge on Project Runway during its ninth season, and has also guested on Britain’s and Ireland’s Next Top Model.
The busy model launched a jewellery line with Roberta Freyman in 2010, and was chosen as the face of the Mediterraneo collection by Spanish firm Carrera y Carrera. As if that’s not enough, she became brand ambassador of the 2013 Maasai Project for Pikolinos, which supports a better quality of life for the Kenyan tribe.
We’re inspired by Olivia Palermo’s feel for trends, and her grasp of how real women dress. When she was asked to pick her three essential items, her answer was: “An amazing pair of heels, a chic, classic watch, and an impeccably tailored blazer”. For us, this illustrates her innate good taste. In 2013 Olivia was chosen as Chadstone’s first Spring/Summer 2013 Icon of Style, appearing at their runway show in Melbourne, Australia. We rest our case!
