No doubt you have your own images and ideas when we mention the long over long trend for Spring/Summer 2015, but it has so many variations and possibilities that it’s worth a moment’s reflection, we feel.
First on our list is the dress over trousers variant, seen at Hermès in cool cream, as frayed fatigues at Chanel, and in silky guise at Dries Van Noten. Chain mail over flares, anyone? Take a look at J. W. Anderson’s inspired creation before you judge. Kenzo’s oversized coat was almost swamped by mega-wide palazzos – an oversized sweater would be a worthy substitute.
Team a long dress with loose trousers and an even lengthier vest. In fact, waistcoats slot into this trend effortlessly, giving you the endless choice that we’ve already talked about. Pull a sleeveless cardigan over wide-legged trousers, flares and palazzos, and climb into the de rigueur platform shoes.
Moving on to skirts, Proenza Schouler’s was hardly visible under a deep blue midi dress, while Stella McCartney offered class in a ribbed tunic and matching maxi skirt. Find your own inspiration in long denim topped by a shearling coat or vest.
Be office-appropriate in a loose tent top with a matching midi, or cover a tailored knit and long skirt with a leather vest. Later, when work ends and play commences, layer chiffon over silk with a floaty scarf for elegance, and add a white chain-handled mini-bag. Work the bohemian vibe in tiers of natural cotton and flower prints.
Throw a wrap coat over baggy pants, or tartan over flares. In fact, add any outerwear, and you’re halfway there. Wear a dark slimline topper over a fitted frock in a bright shade for that important pop of colour. Team a long cream trench with white wide-legged trousers, or an animal print skirt, and top with a fedora.
Offset a lengthy denim jacket with a flimsy maxi in stunning purple or gentle violet. Alternatively, change the dynamic completely with faux-leather pleats. We can’t leave long cardigans out of the mix, and cinched at the waist with a belt, they’ll give some shape to so much up-and-down.
The long over long trend is ideal for all you layer-lovers out there, so we’re expecting you to dive in and come up with lots of original outfits. The vibe this season is comfort, but not complacency – we know you’ll still give your best!
