If there’s one accessory you won’t want to be without for spring 2015, it’s the bucket bag. What could you possibly need more than a roomy everyday receptacle for all your essentials, which, it goes without saying, is still expected to make a strong style statement?
Giorgio Armani, Loewe, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Alberta Ferretti were among those who lived up to these expectations with the production of elegant lines and classic shapes. Victoria Beckham observed the same rules, but introduced reptilian overtones and stealthy leopard prints. Phillip Lim flirted with sizing and cut-outs, while Kenzo mixed canvas, leather and rubber. Meanwhile, Moschino and Marni were embracing colour and prints. Away from the runways, Alexa Chung brought some delicacy to a chunky look with a raffia bucket bag, lacy skater dress and gold-toned shoes.
So as you can see, whether it’s metallic embellishment, houndstooth, monochrome, pastels or primaries, bucket bags are rocking the streets in a riot of colours, designs and finishes, which make them just about indispensable for your spring and summer wardrobe. Grab your portmanteau in real or faux leather, suede, fabric or faux fur, and close with drawstrings, buttons, clips or zips. Embellish with tassels, and stir in colours, materials and prints. Wear with straps, cord or chain handles, over the shoulder, on your back or across the body.
Team tan leather with this season’s scrumptious blush pink, and wrap around a muted check scarf. Staying with reddish brown tones, choose a snake-textured version to couple with denim and a cropped tee, or substitute subtle bi-colours. Sling a large tawny bucket bag on the shoulder of a dark jacket, or over a smoky blanket coat. Be chic with royal blue against a black blazer, or lead with layered shades – add a grey oversized sweater to black skinnies, heels, and carry-all, for example. Alternatively, keep the whole outfit in pastel or add a dark bag as contrast.
Mansur Gavriel led the way with this trend at the start, but now there’s a bucket bag out there for all tastes and incomes, so get yours while you can, and spend a happy afternoon filling it. Just don’t even think about downsizing any time soon!
