We think that slip-on sneakers have everything going for them, from comfort to functionality to style. Now that designers are factoring in the latter without neglecting the former, we strongly suggest that you get yourself a pair (or more), because slip-ons are walking the streets for autumn 2014.
With materials ranging from plain, prints and graphics to leather, metallic and studs, you’re spoilt for choice. Their versatility doesn’t end there. They’re so eager to please, that they’ll accommodate just about any outfit with which you care to challenge them.
Wear plaid and check slip-ons with black leather pants and an oversized white blouse. Stripes and spots, on the other hand, fit well with monochrome separates. Flowered-up sneakers could have been invented for denim overalls, both cut-off and full length, ripped or not. Or opt instead for a crisp, simple look, with navy espadrilles, white jeans, and a Breton top, or soft cotton sweatshirt.
Animal prints and horticulture are a happy match, whether it’s floral sneakers and blouse, broken up by leopard-look leggings, or vice versa. Alternatively, mix with a mini and dark tights, or substitute with a camouflage pattern.
If it’s graphics that are adorning your feet, let them remain the star of the show, by teaming with a single colour. Leather or suede slip-ons can carry any pattern, but a metallic-finish shoe, or a studded one, demands cuffed jeans and a long coat. A sparkly or lace-covered pair for evenings, however, cry out for chiffon, or conversely, keep them dressed down, but smart, with a leather mini or cropped jeans.
Complete the casual look for autumn by pairing your skirt with a loose tee, or some boyfriend jeans with an baggy jumper. Introduce skinny cargo pants to a cashmere sweater, or distressed denim to a black silk shirt. A floral top sits well on skinny jeans, and would match those flower-print slip-ons. Cropped jeans have a natural affinity with this type of footwear.
Cover up with a winter overcoat, flannel shirt, denim jacket, or black bomber. Slip-on sneakers are a good look for men, too, and give them a chance to show a bit of shapely ankle (that’s right, no socks – of course).
Karl Lagerfeld helped along this trend, with his Spring 2014 couture sneakers for Chanel, for which we’re very grateful. Like you, we’re just glad that it’s hanging around for autumn!
