At this time of year, we should really advise you to get a hat for practical reasons, but do we want sensible headwear? This autumn, you can combine warmth and fashion, with the stylish numbers that are on offer.
Fancy a Buffalo hat like the one that Pharrell Williams strutted at the Grammys last January? His was from Vivienne Westwood, but similar big crowns are all over the runways for Fall/Winter 2014, with wide floppy hats another favourite.
Fedoras always make a statement, and will rock any outfit. Insert a feather in the hat band to tickle your bohemian fancies, or run studs along it if grunge is for you. Go for checks or plaid to match clothes, and you’re guaranteed to look smart. Alternatively, exude class with bold colours and a camel coat.
A jaunty beret brings a touch of ooh la la, but if that’s a cliché, refresh as a military look with a belted coat, gloves, a chain-handle bag, and scarily intense red lips. Baseball caps are always with us, but upgrade this time around with a gold band.
Of course, there’s always a chance that you may need weatherproofing at some point. That’s quite likely, we’re afraid! Wide brims risk being snatched away by the wind. So when the gales hit, if you don’t want to see your precious fedora dancing down the street, it’s time to pull on the indispensable beanie.
Brightly coloured knits will cheer monochrome (who wants dull in the season of mists?), perhaps with matching accessories. Or team two shades, say blue and pink, or green and purple, and frame with large sunnies. Try a waffle-knit for a change, or add intrigue and surprise with a net veil.
Knitted caps are neat, and if you hanker after the variety with cat’s ears or whatever, they’re still out there, although you might prefer the more sophisticated look of animal print instead. A riding hat style in felt will mark you out; or top up with a pom pom. Invest in an ear-warming multi-print ski cap like the one Jourdan Dunn has been spotted in. Faux-fur will do the same thing, but make sure your lipstick is bold to stand up to this heavier fabric.
There’s nothing like a stylish hat to give you that wow factor, and this autumn, you’re spoilt for choice. We suggest that you get started now!
