We know just what you need to pull on when chilly air hovers. Why wait for the temperature to drop, though? Looking good right now is just as important. Leather jackets are a staple for any season, but autumn is the best time to grab one.
Which type will you go for? You might want a slim-fit to match a maxi, a floppy hat and a tee, or a black midi and grey beanie. You could be super-stylish in a fit and flare with a similar midi skirt, or perhaps you prefer patterned sleeves (animal print – wow!). Pair distressed leather with cropped pants and an oversized sweater, or with a mini skirt set off by over-knee boots. Search out embellishments such as zips, or choose fringes for a bohemian touch.
Dither between cropped or long, tailored or bomber, collarless or not, moto or hooded. Couple a quilted version with a mini, and Converse high-tops, or layer with an untucked shirt and ripped jeans. Wear with a cable knit, or pretty it up with a floral skirt – switch between maxi, pencil, asymmetric, patterns, and wraps. Stick some overalls underneath for extra warmth.
Leather mixes well with other fabrics like fur and wool, so widen your options. Don’t stick to black – break out in burgundy, night-sky blue or dark green, and match with the rest of your outfit for the ultimate smart look. Team brown with dark denim and ankle boots. Break up with a long white knitted scarf.
Contrast with a flimsy fabric – stun with a white lace dress under a black jacket! Choose a crop style for maximum frock exposure. Or get your evening sorted in sheer chiffon and heels, with leather slung around your shoulders. If you still need inspiration, just turn to Miley Cyrus. She upped the stakes in an all-black combo of cropped sleeve cape, midriff-baring turtle neck, skinnies, and double sole leather sneakers.
How warm is leather? Its windproofing qualities are perfect, but that’s about it. On colder days, go for a wool-lined number over a cashmere sweater. Shearling is more fun because you can flaunt bits on the collar and elsewhere. For real style, cosy up to white leather and sheepskin!
The days are long gone when leather jackets were only for bikers and rock musicians. Nowadays, we can all get in on the act, and for fall 2014, we’ll all be climbing into this classic.
