You don’t need to travel this spring to give your wardrobe an eastern vibe. Kimonos are trending big time for 2015, giving us old Japan mixed with modernity in florals, silhouettes, brocade and embroidery. Geishas took on a military edge to grace the runway at Alexander McQueen, while traditional fabrics and sashes took over Margiela – we particularly liked the marriage of east and west represented by a denim obi cinching a satin jumpsuit.
Martial arts got a nod in the shape of judo belts at Marni and Edun, with the latter’s Danielle Sherman also referencing Roy Lichtenstein and Ivory Coast motifs along the way. Alexander Wang brought the look bang up to date with perforated neoprene belts and cool blazers, while Isabel Marant cinched oversized jackets with a wide leather sash, and Jonathan Anderston debuted at Loewe with built-in knotted obis and leather pants.
Designers like Céline have produced a sophisticated take on the kimono jacket, with Isabel Marant teaming it with a prettily feminine dress. Pair yours with a midi or stay casual by adding wide-leg denim and ankle boots or trainers. Understate the rest of your outfit and mix lengths. Throw a long gown over shorts and a crop top, or couple it with a maxi and tame with a narrow leather belt.
Match pink to orange and floral to taupe, or dream up your own combo. Cover jeans with a long garment in a bold flower print and add snowy sneakers. Go monochrome in total black satin or all-white with filigree details, topped by a fedora or bandana. Forget all that and festoon black with cream lace or a pretty print. For a change from delicate, throw a denim kimono jacket over wide-leg trousers or flares.
Swap wrapped for loose to let flimsy outerwear float, but give it an edge with ripped skinnies and pumps. Flaunt fringes or velvet (or both) in boho style or border paisley with black. Layer over a crop, bikini or nightwear, or follow your own dreams. Pair with a chiffon dress for the ultimate in girliness or toughen up by contrasting with faux-leather leggings.
The oh-so-comfy kimono suits all the shapes we come in. It’s versatile in style and adaptable in wear, adding elegance to any outfit and just a touch of warmth to your shoulders. Wear it anywhere, anyhow and with anything. We don’t think you’ll want to let it go!
