If we had to pick a trend for 2015, we’d take our inspiration from the seventies, and there’s one item that we’re seeing everywhere at the moment. Its shape is A-line and its style is button-front, and as a skirt, it’s hard to beat for practicality and versatility.
Think of Joni Mitchell but you needn’t research too hard, because she’s guesting in the current Saint Laurent ads. Our modern-day muse Alexa Chung champions button-through, both skirts and dresses, in her denim collection for AG. Check out her mini skirt topped with a vision in white aka the silk blouse, balanced by long legs swathed in opaque tights and patent knee-highs.
Denim pre-dates the 1970s, but it had a brilliant decade then, and hasn’t looked back since. Style it pale or indigo with metallic buttons and contrast stitching, cinched with a tan belt. Wear in lengths from maxi upwards, pull on a blazer, and step into platform espadrilles or mules.
Team with a turtleneck and slouchy camel coat, or throw on a furry bomber. Rip it to stay streetwise, or add a feminine touch in a frilly crop. Top distressed fabric with a Breton and a beige jacket, or embrace denim on denim by adding a matching topper instead.
Suede’s also enjoying a revival at the moment. Work this tactile material in tan with a black roll neck, or darkly with a striped shirt. Accentuate its soft side in blush pink and a pastel knit, or match black suede with ankle boots. For a change, switch to plain or patterned corduroy, and team with sneakers.
Get away from retro in a beige midi with chrome buttons. Alexander Wang’s pastel button-front thoughtfully includes roomy pockets with flaps; address its paleness with a black crop or tailored knit. Keep fabric light for floral prints, and button up with bright or clear plastic, or opt for pleats and chunky buttons.
Jessica Alba separated her button-up skirt and printed tank with a black belt, enhanced by an envelope cross-body bag and Givenchy ankle-strap jelly sandals. The actress added a pop of colour with signature red sunnies, complemented with hobo bag and bracelet in turquoise.
Sideline the A-shape for a buttoned pencil like Missoni’s, or try a fuller version with a printed tee or a graphic top. Cosy up to dark faux-leather and render it stunning with white gladiator sandals, but forget the future tense – it’s pretty obvious that button-front skirts are trending already!
