OK, we assume you’ve got your winter wardrobe sorted by now, or the weather will certainly find you out, but how are you going to style it? You’ll have grabbed the essential winter coat for sure, but will it be wool, camel, or a trench over a Breton? You could do worse than to adopt Taylor’s Swift’s duffle coat and plaid skirt, or maybe you’ll think smart and stay cool (but warm) in a tailored grey or pale shade teamed with white pants or cropped denims, and topped with a fedora.
Or will you plump for faux fur? This season offers you the alternatives of pastels and patterns as well as bold fun shades. Take the plunge in white and blend with grey or beige. Peep out of a fur-trimmed parka hood, or peer over a shaggy burgundy collar. Choose a sheepskin jacket instead, or a shearling gilet.
Cosy knits are what you really, really want right now. Throw on an oversized sweater and team it with ripped jeans, or go for the fuzzy option. Look for alpaca, or eschew the casual look for a jumper incorporating lace detail, and pair with a pencil skirt and heels.
Check out textured wool such as cable, or don a cashmere dress and be quietly stunning. Cardigans don’t come any swisher than Bottega Veneta’s grey and black vision, perfectly paired with a cotton top and leggings in nude from the same location, plus grey shoes borrowed from elsewhere.
Oversized scarves will provide so much extra weight that you just won’t need any more layers, except perhaps a beanie. Pull on ankle boots or over the knees, and when the going gets tough, turn to Uggs. No, we’re only kidding…wear them at any time in reality, of course; alternatively, sink into leather and shearling trainers from Chloé.
Alexa Chung added a new twist (naturally) to the tweed jacket when she wore a Chloé navy and white cotton-mix with matching shorts, which lesser mortals could adapt with opaque tights. Or copy her faux-fur animal print over denim dungarees and white cotton tee, with the whole finished by leather sandals.
Cover a jersey dress with a boyfriend coat, or mix a medley of mustards. Leather trousers are looser this season, and look great with furry vests, or substitute a sleeveless shearling coat. Lastly, may we say that if Jennifer Lawrence can wear sunnies in winter, you can too.
